Lilah stared at the "to-die-for" view from her office in the Wolfram & Hart building. The sun had long since set, and the city of Los Angeles below sparked to life with colors and shimmering reflections in the neighboring skyscrapers. She let out a short sigh and returned to her desk, sinking into the chair.
Gavin had outmaneuvered her again, securing a contract with a client that she'd been courting for months. Sure, the Jehumarani Clan were a misogynistic group, not at all happy to have a woman appointed to their case. But she'd hoped to work around that, promising the absolute best in sacrificial lambs, shipped in monthly from the Scottish highlands. And yet Gavin had found some way to have her taken off the case. Sycophantic bastard, she muttered under her breath.
At this firm, one was always having to prove themselves to the Senior Partners. Loyalty, fealty, willingness to sacrifice anything and everything for the good of the firm. She had to admit she was falling behind. Angel was a constant annoyance that even the resurrection of Darla had failed to take care of, and there were other loose ends. She absent-mindedly leafed through the files on her desks, reminding herself that one of those loose ends was sitting in a nearby jail cell eating three square meals a day and atoning for her sins.
Atonement. She chuckled slightly at the thought. After all she'd seen and experienced, she knew that atonement was a golden carrot dangled just out of reach in the attempt to make everyone behave like good little girls and boys. In order to get anywhere in the world, you had to be the one holding the stick with the carrot.
As if she didn't have enough to worry about, it seemed there was a new player in town. Someone not associated with Angel and company who was killing demons, some of their best clients among the recent casualties. And Lilah knew she'd soon be taking flack for that.
She pushed the speakerphone button on the phone to summon her assistant. "Give me the latest status report on our local freelancers, tell me who's available and hungry, and ask our contacts in the forensics department if they have any new leads on the Trelfall demon's murder." She hung up the phone and fell back against the chair, closing her eyes. Tomorrow would be a busy day...
