Christopher Love relaxed deeper into his deckchair, the light glaring off his sunglasses as he sipped the bottle of water. He set it to one side, and continued with reading his book as children played near him.
To most people, he was a tourist. This was true, he could barely get along in this place. Still, necessary to find prey, and he was getting close. Very close. Still, things weren't going well.
He was behind schedule, way behind schedule, and his prey had recruited mercenaries to fight his vampires. And they were professionals.
He'd waited too long to screw this up. Ever since he was young, his wizard father had obsessed over the books of ascension. He’d never succeeded, stopped by a champion of the Powers that Be. But they didn’t know about Christopher. Couldn’t see him coming, and couldn’t do a thing. Now, the apprehension was….almost unbearable. He was close to ultimate power, and now it could be snatched away from him because of some stupid kid. His kid.
His father and mother had been dead for many years. His mother was sacrificed to achieve ascension, but at the last moment, his father was stopped. The date of his ascension passed, and he was quickly decapitated. But that wouldn’t happen to Christopher.
He got to his feet, stretching and decided to go for a hotdog. The breeze picked up, suddenly becoming colder…much colder, but no one seemed to-
It was only him. The weather hadn’t changed, it was a feeling…the spell had worked. The spell, of course…the one he’d had done to him, to sense whenever one of his children attempted a protection spell or something similar. The spell was meant to protect, but in reality, served as a homing beacon for Christopher. He was chilled to the bone…yes, he could feel it…where….a man…tall, muscular, dark hair-
Reuben. Aha. Reuben.
His eyes half-closed, trying to get a better picture…Reuben…a shop…some girl…a gargoyle?
The girl, she’d cast the spell. Well, he’d have to thank her personally. A grin opened on his face like a slash and he tore off his sunglasses. At last. Some good news.
