Faith couldn't help but feel more relaxed the more he talked. When she had spoken to him over the phone, before she found out who he was, she had hit it off with him instantly. Now she was beginning to feel like things were going back that way.
"Anyway, that's how I know and it also explains why I carry a gun loaded with wooden pellets, which by the way I'm sorry for almost killin' you back there"
"I'm used to it. Besides, since you know all about Slayers, you'd know we're quicker than most. I doubt you could've hit me even if you were trying." She smiled.

Laughing again he rubbed his hands together "Yeah, you're right, not as fast as I used to be when I first started out" things seemed to be getting more relaxed between them, which he was happy about as having a relationship was important to him, if not for himself then for the memory of his sister who he regretted never talking to "So, what exactly brings you to L.A., watchers council send ya here?"

"Not exactly." She wondered how much she should really tell him.
The waitress returned with two coffees, setting them down on the table before smiling widely again and wandering off to fetch the food.
"Though I am here because of a vampire." She took a sip of the steaming brew and wrapped her hands around the hot mug.

"Ah, I see, well, you are a slayer after all" he made sure to say the word slayer as low as he could"How long you bein' doin' the whole killing vampires gig then?"

"A few years. Did most of my slaying back in Sunnydale. This is the first night I've been out in L.A. for a long time." She said staring out of the window at the night sky.

"Really?" he frowned slightly then sat back as the waitress bought their food over, thanking her he picked up his burger "This is good stuff, may not look all that good but just wait till you taste it" biting it he chewed thoughtfully and nodded "Now that's what I've been wanting for a long time" he said with a full mouth

He was right. It didn't look particularly good, but the smell of the burger now sat in front of Faith was delicious. Without realising how hungry she actually was, Faith scooped up the food and devoured it in minutes, only occasionally stopping to make satisfied and happy noises at the taste. Her enthusiastic eyes glanced up to see Mike watching in wonder. She finished chewing and gave him a slightly embarassed smile.
"Slaying always makes me hungry..." She offered by way of explanation.

"I can see that, you're a Hudson girl alright" he said laughing. Picking up his drink he took a sip and smirked "It ever bother you? this life you lead? you ever sop and think what your life would a been like had you not been chosen to fight the good fight?"

She managed to swallow before she blurted out her answer.
"Never really thought about it, guess I like it too much, but I've no doubt I'd have ended up just like mom, drunk and violent. Most likely I'd still have gone to prison too..." Then she realised what she'd said and tried to cover it, hoping Mike hadn't picked it up.
"So...how'd you go from supernatural hunter to radio dj, huh?"

"He almost chocked when she mentioned prison, after coughing a few times he took a drink then looked at Faith as she asked him the question "Well, As well,as huntin' demons I used to hutn deer on the side, made quite a name for myselfas one of the best, about fifteen years ago I was asked to make an appearance on a radio show, apparantly the DJ hosting didn't approve of me killing animals"
He stopped eating and frowned "So I figured It might do mesome good to try and convince listenrs that hunting deer was a good thing, well I was a little stupid back then, anyway, I go on and he starts calling me and animal killer basically wanted me to flip out but I'm just responding to his question ina calm, collected manner, even stumped him a couple times when he triedto makeme look stupid"
Hr laughed eating some of his food "Any, the execsofthe station where impressed and they asked me if I'd like to the new host for their latest show on the supernatural, figured I was witty and a good talker so...here I am"

"They were right about the good talker part." Faith said pointing a french fry at him, before eating it. She breathed a little sigh of relief that he hadn't asked her what she meant about being in prison.

"I know what you're thinkin' darlin' and to be honest I don't care why you did some time" he shrugged "I'm not disappointed or anything but I know it's probably something you don't wanna talk about" he'd had a number of friends go to jail over the years, so he knew how it changed a person.

Faith had expected a hundred and one questions to come out of his mouth about why she went to prison, but again he managed to surprise her by being cool about the whole thing. He was right though, she didn't really want to talk about it, at least not now. Maybe one day, she'd be able to sit down with him and tell him everything. But not today.
She looked down at the now virtually empty plate and used the last of the fries to make patterns in the ketchup.
"You might care, if you knew why." She looked up into his eyes. "And eventually, I might tell you, let you judge for yourself." She paused and stared out of the window. "But I like the way things are going, us catching up and everything. It's...nice, y'know."

He nodded "Listen Faith, when I was thirteen I made a promise to your mother, I said I'd always take care of her" he he shook his head "When I left I never thought about but it did catch up with me and by the time I so much as called Nancy, her life wasn't exactly how I hoped it would turn out" he sat back "To be completely honest with you Faith, I sometimes blame myself for how things turned out"
For years Mike had blamed himself for how Nancy had turned out, her abusive husband and having to bring a kind up in that environment, it was when he was told about her dying he turely felt responsible "I just want you to know you're not alone in this world at least when it comes to family"

"To be completely honest with you Faith, I sometimes blame myself for how things turned out"
Faith turned back to look at him and could plainly see he felt guilty. But she didn't blame him, even if she had known about him all those years ago, what could he have done different that would have stopped her family from tearing itself apart.
"I just want you to know you're not alone in this world at least when it comes to family"
An appreciative smile edged it's way across Faith's face. She thought about putting her hand on his, showing some kind of affection, but it wasn't her style. Instead she simply said "Thanks."
For a moment, the two of them shared a silence that wasn't awkward, or obtrusive. It was just a moment of realisation. For Faith, she knew he meant what he said. She believed he'd be around if she ever needed him. They had some kind of kinship that was deeper than just family. He knew what she was, and he respected that. Respect was something never shown in the Lehane household. Who knows, maybe things would have been different if he'd been around.
"I guess I better head back out." She said, glancing out of the window, her eyes tracing the shadows for some kind of nasty. "The world won't save itself." She added, with a chuckle.
